Mary Renault （1905——1983）出生于伦敦，从牛津大学圣休斯学院毕业后，用了三年学习护理，1939年出版第一部小说《爱的承诺》（Promise of Love），随后三部小说也是在护士生涯中写出的，多少都与医院生活有关。1948年，她移居南非，在当地首先写了《御者》（The Charioteer），是以二战为背景的男性之间的爱情故事，成为同性恋文学史上的里程碑。此后，她转向古希腊背景的历史小说写作，共写出八部大气磅礴、细节精确的作品，最著名的是亚历山大大帝三部曲：《天堂之火》（Fire from Heaven）、《波斯男孩》（The Persian Boy）及《葬礼竞技》（Funeral Games）。
